Product Description for Titanium Grade 9 Round Bar

Titanium Grade 9 Round Bar is made from Ti-3Al-2.5V, a near-alpha alloy with UNS number R56320 and German material number 3.7195. Bars are supplied to ASTM B348, with ASME SB348 for pressure use and AMS specifications for aerospace orders.

With about 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium, Grade 9 carries roughly half the alloy content of Grade 5. It is about 80% stronger than Grade 2 in tensile strength, yet it can still be cold formed and welded far more easily than Grade 5.

Corrosion resistance is close to commercially pure titanium, including excellent resistance to seawater and oxidising chlorides. Bars are supplied annealed, and can be turned, ground or polished. The alloy is non-magnetic. Most Grade 9 is made as seamless tube for aircraft hydraulic lines, bicycle frames and sports equipment, where its formability matters. Round bar is used for fittings, connectors, fasteners and machined parts that must match Grade 9 tube in the same assembly, so welds and threads join like with like. It is also used where Grade 2 is too weak but Grade 5 is hard to form or weld. The palladium-bearing version, Grade 18, is available for more corrosive service. Sports equipment makers use it for bicycle parts, golf club parts and tennis racquet frames. Marine and medical makers use bar for fittings, shafts and instrument parts that need more strength than Grade 2 without the forming limits of Grade 5. Bars are also used for high-strength fasteners in marine hardware. Cut pieces are available. Bright bar is stocked.

Common Applications of Titanium Grade 9 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Titanium Grade 9 Round Bar is ordered as UNS R56320 to ASTM B348 in the annealed condition.

Annealing is done at about 650-790°C. Standard tests are heat analysis with interstitials, tensile tests and dimensional checks. Physical data are reference values: density about 4.48 g/cm³ and modulus about 100 GPa.

ASTM B348 covers Grade 9 bar in the annealed condition, and ASME SB348 applies to pressure parts. Aerospace users often order Ti-3Al-2.5V to AMS specifications, which set tighter limits on microstructure, texture and testing, particularly for hydraulic tube and matching fittings. When bar is machined into hydraulic fittings, check whether the aerospace fitting standard calls for a specific AMS document. Bar can also be ordered cold worked and stress relieved for higher strength, but the order must state this condition and the required properties, because they are not the same as annealed values.

Grade 9 size tolerances come from the ASTM B348 tables. Ground bar can be supplied to tighter limits for fittings. For aerospace hydraulic fittings, check which AMS document the fitting drawing names, and order the bar to that document so tube and fitting are covered by the same control.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Ti Grade 9 Round Bar

The table shows the ASTM B348 limits for Grade 9. Vanadium at 2.0-3.0% is a beta stabiliser. It adds a small amount of beta phase to the mainly alpha structure, which improves strength and hot workability without making the alloy hard to weld. Aluminium at 2.5-3.5% strengthens the alpha phase. Together, they give about half the alloy content of Grade 5, which is why Grade 9 sits between CP titanium and Grade 5 in strength and formability. Oxygen is limited to 0.15%, lower than in Grade 2, because the alloying elements already provide strength and extra oxygen would reduce ductility. Iron is held at 0.25% maximum. Hydrogen at 0.015% maximum protects against hydride embrittlement.

Each other residual in Grade 9 is capped at 0.1%, with 0.4% for all of them together. Nitrogen and carbon are limited to 0.03% and 0.08%.

Vanadium is checked on every heat. A handheld XRF check on received bar can show both aluminium and vanadium, which quickly separates Grade 9 from commercially pure titanium and from Grade 5. Keep Grade 9 stock separate from Grade 5.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Ti Grade 9 Round Bar

The table lists ASTM B348 minimums for annealed Grade 9 bar. ASTM B348 requires annealed Grade 9 bar to reach tensile strength of at least 620 MPa, yield strength of at least 483 MPa, elongation of at least 15% and reduction of area of at least 25%. This is roughly 80% stronger than Grade 2 while keeping good ductility. Cold-worked and stress-relieved material reaches much higher strength and is used for hydraulic tube, but that condition must be ordered specifically. Grade 9 keeps good toughness at low temperature and good fatigue strength. At high temperature, its strength falls faster than Grade 5, so it is not chosen for hot engine parts.

For machined fittings, the annealed condition gives the best balance of strength and machinability. Surface finish and thread form strongly affect fatigue life in hydraulic fittings, so rolled threads are often specified.

Welded parts should be tested in the as-welded state, because the weld zone has a slightly different structure from the bar. The modulus of about 100 GPa, lower than steel, should be allowed for in stiffness calculations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Titanium Grade 9 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Choose Grade 9 when a part needs higher strength than pure titanium but better cold formability and weldability than Grade 5. Its strength sits about halfway between Grade 2 and Grade 5. Grade 5 is stronger, can be heat treated and is chosen for highly stressed aerospace and structural parts. Grade 9 also costs less.
Grade 9 contains about 3% aluminium and 2.5% vanadium, which is roughly half the 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium in Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). The nickname comes from this. The lower alloy content gives lower strength than Grade 5 but much better cold formability and weldability, which is why Grade 9 is popular for tube and matching fittings.
Yes. Ti-3Al-2.5V seamless tube is widely used for aircraft hydraulic lines because it combines high strength, low weight and good cold formability for bending. Round bar in the same grade is used for fittings and connectors so they match the tube. Aerospace parts are normally ordered to AMS specifications, which add tighter controls than ASTM B348.
Grade 18 is Ti-3Al-2.5V with about 0.04-0.08% palladium added. The palladium improves resistance to reducing acids and crevice corrosion, in the same way that Grade 7 improves on Grade 2. Strength is the same as Grade 9. Grade 18 is used where Grade 9 strength is needed in more corrosive chemical or marine service.
Weld Grade 9 by TIG with matching Ti-3Al-2.5V filler and full argon shielding of the weld, root and hot surrounding metal. It is supplied annealed, or cold worked and stress relieved when ordered. Machining is easier than Grade 5 but still needs sharp carbide tools, low speeds and high coolant flow.
Grade 9 is weaker than Grade 5, so it is not chosen for the highest-strength parts, and it cannot be hardened by ageing. Bar availability is lower than for Grade 2 or Grade 5. Its strength falls faster than Grade 5 at high temperature. Keep parts clean of iron contamination during machining and welding.
