Product Description for Titanium Grade 6 Round Bar
Titanium Grade 6 Round Bar is made from Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, an all-alpha titanium alloy with UNS number R54520 and German material number 3.7115. It was listed as Grade 6 in earlier editions of ASTM B348, and bar is now bought mainly to AMS 4926, with the extra-low-interstitial version to AMS 4924.
Aluminium at about 5% and tin at about 2.5% both strengthen the alpha phase. With no beta-stabilising elements, the alloy stays all-alpha at every temperature, so it cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it welds well and keeps its properties close to the weld line.
Bars come in the annealed condition, either descaled, turned, ground or polished. Like other titanium grades, Grade 6 is non-magnetic and weighs about 40% less than steel. Common uses are compressor casings, engine brackets, airframe parts near hot zones, cryogenic pressure vessels, liquid hydrogen fittings and turbopump parts. Grade 6 is best known for two very different jobs. At high temperature, its alpha structure resists creep better than Grade 5 up to about 480°C, which suits engine casings and hot structural parts. At very low temperature, the extra-low-interstitial version keeps its toughness where most alloys become brittle, and it has been used in rocket engine turbopumps and liquid hydrogen parts. Because it is weldable and cannot be hardened by heat treatment, welds keep properties close to the base metal. For buyers, the main point is that Grade 6 is a specialist alloy, bought to AMS documents and often in small lots, so lead times should be checked early.
Common Applications of Titanium Grade 6 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Titanium Grade 6 Round Bar is ordered to AMS 4926 for standard annealed bar. Current editions of ASTM B348 no longer list Grade 6, so the order must name the AMS document and its revision.
Annealing is usually done at about 720–845°C, followed by air cooling. The annealed structure is equiaxed alpha, which gives the best balance of ductility and creep strength.
Physical values in the table are reference data: density about 4.48 g/cm³, low thermal expansion and a modulus of about 110 GPa. Standard testing covers heat analysis including oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen, tensile tests and dimensional checks, with ultrasonic testing to an AMS class on request.
Standard Grade 6 bar is ordered to AMS 4926, and the extra-low-interstitial version, often called Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI, is ordered to AMS 4924 for cryogenic parts. The ELI grade has tighter limits on oxygen, iron and other interstitials, which gives better toughness at low temperature but lower strength. For each order, state the AMS specification, diameter, finish and any ultrasonic testing class. Because the grade was removed from ASTM B348, older drawings that call up “ASTM B348 Grade 6” should be reviewed with the designer and changed to the current AMS document.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Ti Grade 6 Round Bar
The table shows the limits given for Grade 6 in earlier ASTM B348 editions. AMS 4926 limits are very close, and AMS 4924 sets tighter interstitials for the ELI grade.
Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen are interstitial elements. They sit between titanium atoms and raise strength, but even small increases cut ductility and low-temperature toughness, so each is tightly limited. Iron is held to 0.50% maximum as a residual. Tin at 2–3% adds solid-solution strength without reducing weldability, and it helps the alloy keep strength at high temperature. Aluminium at 4–6% is the main alpha stabiliser and gives most of the strength, but too much aluminium can form a brittle Ti3Al phase, which is why the upper limit is controlled. Oxygen at 0.20% maximum in the standard grade is lowered in the ELI version, because oxygen raises strength but reduces toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Hydrogen is limited to 0.015%, as titanium hydrides can embrittle the metal. The alloy contains no beta stabilisers such as vanadium or molybdenum, so it stays all-alpha.
Iron and residual elements are also kept low in the ELI grade because they reduce toughness in cold service.

The table lists the minimum tensile, yield, elongation and reduction of area values once given for annealed Grade 6 in ASTM B348. The table shows the minimums from older ASTM B348 editions: 828 MPa tensile strength, 795 MPa yield strength, 10% elongation and 25% reduction of area. AMS 4926 sets its own minimums, which are close but slightly lower, so the ordered document governs. The ELI grade has lower strength at room temperature, but it gains strength and keeps useful toughness as temperature falls, which is why it is chosen for cryogenic tanks and turbopumps. Because Grade 6 cannot be hardened, its strength is set by chemistry and annealing. For hot parts, creep data at the service temperature should be taken from producer or AMS sources.
Because Grade 6 is all-alpha, its properties change little with section size, which makes large bars more predictable than alpha-beta alloys.
For parts in cryogenic service, many users also order fracture toughness or impact tests at the service temperature, especially for the ELI grade. Certificates should report every test against the AMS limits. Weld test coupons are often required.
