Product Description for Titanium Grade 12 Round Bar
Titanium Grade 12 Round Bar is made from Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni, designated UNS R53400 and 3.7105. Bars are supplied to ASTM B348, with ASME SB348 for pressure equipment.
Small additions of molybdenum, about 0.3%, and nickel, about 0.8%, do two jobs. They improve resistance to crevice corrosion in hot chloride brines, and they raise strength well above Grade 2 without precious metals.
Bars are supplied annealed, and can be turned or ground. The alloy is non-magnetic. Grade 12 was developed as a cheaper alternative to palladium titanium for hot brine service. Its small molybdenum and nickel additions improve crevice corrosion resistance in hot chloride solutions, and they also raise strength well above Grade 2. This extra strength is useful in pressure equipment, where the higher allowable stress in the ASME code lets designers use thinner walls. It is widely used in desalination plants, geothermal systems, hydrometallurgy and chemical plants handling hot brines. It is less resistant than Grade 7 in strong reducing acids, so the choice depends on the exact service conditions. Bar is machined into flanges, tube sheets, fasteners, pump shafts and valve parts for these plants. Because the alloy is stronger than Grade 2, fasteners and flanges can often be smaller, which offsets some of the cost of titanium. Where hot brines are only mildly reducing, it gives much of the benefit of palladium grades at a lower price. Bars can be supplied cut to length. It is widely used in geothermal brine plants too. Ground and polished bar is also available.
Common Applications of Titanium Grade 12 Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Titanium Grade 12 Round Bar is ordered as UNS R53400 to ASTM B348 in the annealed condition.
Grade 12 bar is annealed at about 650–760°C. Physical data are reference values close to Grade 2, with a density of about 4.51 g/cm³.
ASTM B348 covers Grade 12 bar in the annealed condition, and ASME SB348 applies to pressure parts. The ASME code gives Grade 12 higher allowable stresses than Grade 2, which is a key reason for choosing it in pressure equipment. Bar is used for flanges, tube sheets, fasteners, valve parts and pump shafts in systems built from Grade 12 tube and plate. Cold forming needs larger bend radii than Grade 2 because ductility is lower, so check forming limits before designing tight bends. Certificates should report molybdenum and nickel, which confirm the grade.
Tolerances follow ASTM B348 tables, and ground bar can be supplied to tighter limits. For pressure parts, check that the design uses the Grade 12 allowable stresses and that weld procedures are qualified on Grade 12. When mixed with Grade 2 in one system, keep material segregated and marked.

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Ti Grade 12 Round Bar
The table shows the ASTM B348 limits for Grade 12. The oxygen and iron limits, 0.25% and 0.30% maximum, are the same as Grade 2. The difference comes from molybdenum and nickel. Nickel forms a small amount of Ti2Ni phase, which helps the hydrogen reaction on the metal surface and keeps titanium passive in crevices, in a similar way to palladium but less strongly. Molybdenum adds solid-solution strength and improves resistance in reducing conditions. Together, they give strength well above Grade 2 and better crevice resistance, at a much lower cost than palladium. Hydrogen is limited to 0.015%.
The certificate should report molybdenum and nickel, which confirm the grade and separate it from Grade 2 in mixed stock. Residuals in Grade 12 are capped at 0.1% each, 0.4% in total.
Nickel above the range can reduce ductility, while too little lowers crevice resistance, which is why both limits matter. Titanium forms the rest of the alloy. As with all titanium grades, galvanic contact with more active metals and cathodic protection systems should be reviewed, because they can drive hydrogen into the metal.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Ti Grade 12 Round Bar
The table gives ASTM B348 minimums for annealed Grade 12. ASTM B348 requires Grade 12 bar to reach tensile strength of at least 483 MPa, yield strength of at least 345 MPa, elongation of at least 18% and reduction of area of at least 25%. This is about 40% stronger than Grade 2 in tensile strength and 25% stronger in yield. The higher strength allows thinner sections in pressure parts. Ductility is lower than Grade 2, so bending and flaring need more care. Grade 12 keeps useful strength at moderate temperature and good toughness at low temperature. For design, use the ASME allowable stresses for the service temperature.
Grade 12 has a finer, two-phase structure than Grade 2, which is where its extra strength comes from. For shafts and fasteners, the higher yield strength allows smaller diameters, and fatigue strength is also higher than Grade 2.
Check forming limits on trial pieces before production bending of tubes or bars, and ask the mill for bend test results where parts will be formed cold. Hardness is not an ASTM B348 acceptance value, but a quick hardness check helps separate Grade 12 from Grade 2 in mixed stock.
