Product Description for Titanium Grade 8 Round Bar

Titanium Grade 8 Round Bar is a name that still appears in some supplier catalogues, enquiries and older drawings. It is not a grade in the current edition of ASTM B348, the main American standard for titanium bars and billets, so the name alone does not define a material. There is no current ASTM chemistry, UNS number or set of mechanical requirements that can be quoted for it.

This matters because titanium grades differ widely. A commercially pure grade has modest strength and excellent corrosion resistance, while an alloy grade can be more than twice as strong and behave very differently in acids or at high temperature. Two suppliers quoting “Grade 8” may therefore offer two very different bars.

The safe route is to ask the designer or end user which alloy was intended, then order it by UNS number and governing specification, for example ASTM B348 for a current grade or an AMS specification for an aerospace alloy. The nearest current ASTM B348 grades by number are Grade 7 (Ti-0.15Pd) and Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V).

Once the alloy is confirmed, bars can be supplied annealed or in the specified condition, cut to length, and turned, ground or polished, with a full EN 10204 3.1 certificate. Do not accept a certificate that shows only “Grade 8” without a standard, UNS number and heat analysis. If the enquiry comes from an old drawing, the drawing revision history or the original purchase records often show which alloy was meant, and this should be checked before any quote.

Common Applications of Titanium Grade 8 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Get the key technical specifications for Titanium Grade 8 Round Bar

Grade 8 has no specification of its own in the current edition of ASTM B348. The technical table therefore shows only the general supply options for titanium bar, not grade-specific values.

Before ordering, the buyer should write down the confirmed alloy, its UNS number, the governing specification and its edition, the delivery condition, diameter, length, tolerance class and surface finish. For aerospace work, the AMS specification for the confirmed alloy will also set heat treatment, microstructure and ultrasonic testing requirements.

Density, thermal conductivity and other physical values depend on the actual alloy. For example, commercially pure titanium has a density of about 4.51 g/cm³, while beta alloys can exceed 5.0 g/cm³. These values should be taken from the data for the confirmed grade, not from a generic titanium sheet.

Once the alloy is agreed, record the substitution in writing on the drawing or purchase order, so that later inspection teams know which document governs. Inspection should then follow that specification, including ultrasonic testing classes and tolerance tables where they apply. Keep the written record with the part file. Confirm the edition of the standard too.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Ti Grade 8 Round Bar

No chemical composition is shown because Grade 8 is not defined in the current ASTM B348. Showing limits for a grade that the standard does not list would risk wrong material being ordered and accepted.

When the alloy is confirmed, its composition comes from the governing specification. For titanium, the certificate must show not only the alloying elements, such as aluminium, vanadium, palladium, molybdenum or nickel, but also the interstitial elements oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen. These interstitials strongly affect strength and ductility, and they are tested by laboratory methods such as inert gas fusion rather than handheld XRF.

A handheld XRF check on received bar can quickly show whether key alloying elements are present, which helps confirm that the bar matches the agreed alloy before machining starts.

Where the drawing gives only the grade number, ask for the intended application. Knowing the service medium, temperature and load usually narrows the choice to one or two listed grades, whose chemistry can then be written onto the order. Keep the laboratory reports with the certificate. Reject bars without a heat number.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Ti Grade 8 Round Bar

No mechanical properties are shown because Grade 8 has no current ASTM B348 requirements. Strength can range from about 240 MPa minimum tensile strength for soft commercially pure grades to over 1000 MPa for heat-treated alloy grades, so no single value would be correct.

Once the alloy is confirmed, the governing specification sets tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction of area and any hardness or fracture toughness limits for the ordered condition and size. For parts that are heat treated after delivery, the specification may also give required properties after a test heat treatment.

The certificate should report the actual test results for the heat and lot supplied. Design engineers should not use generic titanium data for a bar sold only as “Grade 8”.

Where a part is replacing an existing one, a hardness test on the old part can help show whether it was a soft commercially pure grade or a stronger alloy. This is only a guide, and the final choice must come from the designer or end user. Record the decision with the part file. Do not guess from price or colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Titanium Grade 8 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
Titanium Grade 8 is not a grade in the current edition of ASTM B348, which is the main standard for titanium bars. The name has been used in the past and in some trade listings, but it does not point to one fixed alloy today. Before any order, the buyer and supplier must agree the actual alloy, UNS number and specification, so that chemistry, strength and testing are defined.
Because Grade 8 has no current ASTM B348 definition, two suppliers may quote different alloys under the same name. One may offer a commercially pure grade and another an alloy grade with very different strength and corrosion behaviour. This can lead to rejected parts, failed inspections or unsafe designs. Always ask for the UNS number and the governing standard in writing before accepting a quote.
The right choice depends on the need. Grade 2 is the common choice for general corrosion resistance. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) gives high strength. Grade 7 or Grade 11 resist reducing acids and crevice corrosion, and Grade 12 is a lower-cost option for hot brines. Share the service medium, temperature and load with the supplier so they can recommend a grade that is listed in ASTM B348.
Contact the designer or end user and ask which alloy was intended. Then write the confirmed UNS number, standard such as ASTM B348 or an AMS specification, condition, diameter, length and tolerance on the order. Ask for an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing heat number, chemistry and tensile results. Record the agreed substitution in writing so that inspection teams accept it.
Match the heat number on the bar with the mill test certificate and check that the certificate names a UNS number and standard. A handheld XRF test can show whether the bar contains aluminium, vanadium, palladium, molybdenum or nickel, which helps identify the actual alloy. Oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen need laboratory testing. If the certificate names no standard, do not accept the bars.
Yes. Once the alloy and specification are agreed, titanium bars can be supplied in random lengths or cut to exact lengths, and turned, ground or peeled to the required finish. Saw cutting is done with coolant to avoid heat damage and iron contamination. State the tolerance class and finish on the enquiry so the supplier can price and plan the work correctly.
