Hastelloy B2 Round Bar

Hastelloy B2 Round Bar is a low-carbon nickel-molybdenum alloy, UNS N10665 (W.Nr. 2.4617), supplied solution annealed to ASTM B335. Its very low carbon and silicon allow as-welded use in hot hydrochloric acid. It is widely installed in older chemical plants, although B-3 is now chosen for most new equipment because B2 can embrittle quickly during heating.

Product Description for Hastelloy B2 Round Bar

Hastelloy Alloy B2 Round Bar is made from nickel-molybdenum alloy UNS N10665, known in Germany as 2.4617 (NiMo28). Bar is supplied to ASTM B335 and ASME SB335 in the solution annealed condition.

B2 was introduced in the 1970s to fix the weld problem of the original Alloy B. By cutting carbon to 0.02% maximum, silicon to 0.10% maximum and iron to 2.0% maximum, the makers stopped carbide formation in the heat-affected zone. For most reducing-acid duties, welded B2 can go straight into service without a post-weld anneal.

Its corrosion resistance matches the family. It handles hydrochloric acid of every strength up to boiling, hydrogen chloride gas, hydrobromic acid and reducing sulfuric acid. Like all Ni-Mo alloys, it fails in oxidising conditions, so ferric salts, cupric salts, nitric acid and aeration must be kept out.

The lower iron that helped weldability had a side effect. When B2 passes through about 600–800°C, ordered Ni4Mo phase can form within minutes, making the metal brittle. Hot forming, stress relief and slow cooling after annealing can crack parts. This thermal sensitivity is why B-3 was developed.

B2 bar remains in demand for spares and for plants that have qualified procedures for it. It is non-magnetic and supplied turned, peeled or ground with EN 10204 3.1 certification. Common parts are agitator shafts, pump shafts, valve trim, bolting and nozzles in hydrochloric acid, acetic acid and other reducing chemical service.

Because B2 reacts quickly to heat between about 600°C and 800°C, suppliers anneal bar with care and quench it fast. Fabricators should avoid long stress-relief cycles and keep interpass temperature low when welding shafts or fittings.

Common Applications of Hastelloy B2 Round Bar

➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.

➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.

➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.

➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

ASTM B335 covers UNS N10665 rod and bar, and ASME SB335 is used for pressure-retaining parts. B2 has allowable stresses in ASME Section II-D, which lets it be used in Section VIII vessels within the listed temperature range.

The delivery condition is solution annealed at about 1065°C followed by a fast water quench. Cooling speed matters more for B2 than for most alloys, because slow cooling through the 600–800°C range can start ordering. Mills control this closely, and buyers who heat treat parts themselves must copy the same fast quench.

Density is about 9.2 g/cm³, and the alloy has low thermal expansion for a nickel alloy. The table shows producer reference values for physical properties, not required limits.

Standard tests include heat chemistry, tension tests and dimensional checks. For critical service, buyers may add ultrasonic testing of each bar, PMI to confirm molybdenum level, and a room-temperature bend or hardness check after a simulated fabrication heat cycle to confirm the bar has not begun to order.

Cold-finished B2 bar is held to tight diameter limits for pump and valve shafts, while hot-finished bar carries a larger allowance and is rough turned before final machining.

Chemical Composition

View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Hastelloy B2 Round Bar

The composition table lists ASTM B335 limits for UNS N10665. Nickel forms the balance and molybdenum is set at 26–30%, the same band as Alloy B, so resistance to reducing acids is kept.

The key changes are in the minor elements. Carbon is capped at 0.02% and silicon at 0.10%, which stops the grain-boundary carbides and silicides that made welded Alloy B vulnerable. Iron is cut to 2.0% maximum and vanadium is no longer added.

These cuts gave B2 its weldability, but they also made the matrix more prone to ordering. With little iron or chromium to disturb the atomic arrangement, nickel and molybdenum atoms quickly line up into Ni4Mo and Ni3Mo phases when heated in the danger range. These phases raise hardness and cut ductility sharply.

Chromium is limited to 1.0% and cobalt to 1.0%. Manganese, phosphorus and sulfur are controlled as residuals to support hot working and cleanliness.

The certificate should show carbon and silicon clearly, as these confirm the bar is B2 rather than the older Alloy B.

Low iron and chromium let the Ni4Mo ordered phase form if the metal is held near 700°C, and this reduces ductility within a short time.

Mechanical Properties

Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Hastelloy B2 Round Bar

ASTM B335 requires solution annealed N10665 bar to reach at least 760 MPa tensile strength, 350 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation. These values apply to the tested size range of the standard.

The high elongation shows how ductile B2 is when it has been annealed and quenched correctly. That ductility can be lost very quickly. Exposure of less than an hour in the 600–800°C band can start ordering, and longer holds can drop elongation to a few percent. Parts that crack during forming or welding are often traced to this effect.

Because of this, fabricators should avoid slow heating and cooling, stress-relief treatments in the danger zone and repeated weld repairs on the same spot. Any hot forming should be followed by a full solution anneal and water quench.

Hardness is not a required property in ASTM B335, but a rise in hardness after fabrication can be a useful warning sign of ordering. Tensile results for each heat should be checked on the EN 10204 3.1 certificate before the bar is released to production.

Hardness climbs sharply once ordering starts, so a simple hardness check is a useful screen on repaired or reheated B2 parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you should be aware of regarding Hastelloy B2 Round Bar from the grade and standards internationally, to the available sizes and finishes, requirements for manufacturing and application. This section will help buyers examine specifications and options for supply prior to making an inquiry or requesting a quote.
It is solid bar in UNS N10665, a low-carbon, low-iron nickel-molybdenum alloy with about 28% molybdenum. It is supplied solution annealed to ASTM B335 and used for shafts, valve parts and fasteners in hydrochloric acid and other reducing media. Its main advantage over the original Alloy B is that welded parts can usually go into service without re-annealing.
Choose B-3 for most new equipment. It has the same acid resistance but is far more stable during heating, so it is less likely to crack during hot forming, welding or stress relief. Choose B2 when a plant has qualified procedures, spare-parts lists or code approvals that name UNS N10665 and the change to B-3 has not been approved.
Between about 600°C and 800°C, the nickel and molybdenum atoms in B2 can arrange into ordered phases such as Ni4Mo within a short time. These phases make the alloy hard and brittle. Slow cooling after annealing, stress relief in this range or long weld heat cycles can therefore lead to cracks, especially in heavily restrained parts.
Use TIG or MIG with ERNiMo-7 filler, low heat input, stringer beads and interpass temperature below about 95°C. Joints must be very clean because sulfur and lead can cause hot cracking. Most parts can be used as-welded. Avoid preheat and post-weld heat treatment in the 600–800°C range, and use a full solution anneal if heat treatment is needed.
Oxidising agents such as ferric chloride, cupric chloride, nitric acid, chlorine and dissolved oxygen quickly break down its corrosion resistance. Even small amounts of iron or copper ions from other plant equipment can cause attack in hot hydrochloric acid. If oxidisers cannot be excluded, a Ni-Cr-Mo alloy such as C-276 or C-2000 should be considered.
Yes. Bar is supplied solution annealed and can be cut to exact lengths, then turned, peeled or centreless ground to the required tolerance. Saw cutting and machining do not change its properties, but heavy grinding heat should be avoided. Each piece should carry heat number marking so it can be traced back to the 3.1 certificate.
