Product Description for Hastelloy C Round Bar
Hastelloy Alloy C Round Bar is a name that still appears on older drawings, pump and valve spares lists and plant records. It refers to UNS N10002, the first nickel-chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy, introduced in the 1930s for mixed chemical service.
The alloy was a major step forward in its time. About 16% chromium gave resistance to oxidising media, while about 16% molybdenum and 4% tungsten gave resistance to reducing media and pitting. It was one of the first alloys able to handle wet chlorine, hypochlorites and ferric and cupric chloride solutions.
Its weakness was carbon and silicon. With up to 0.08% carbon and 1.0% silicon, welded parts formed carbides and intermetallic phases in the heat-affected zone, which could lead to severe intergranular corrosion. Every welded part had to be solution annealed, which was often impractical for large equipment.
In the 1960s, C-276 replaced it with carbon of 0.01% maximum and silicon of 0.08% maximum. Wrought Alloy C then dropped out of production, and there is no current ASTM wrought bar specification for UNS N10002. The chemistry survives in the cast grade CW-12MW to ASTM A494, used for pump casings and valve bodies.
For bar, the normal route today is to supply C-276 to ASTM B574, which matches or exceeds Alloy C in corrosion resistance and can be used as-welded. The buyer should get written approval from the end user before substituting, and the certificate must show the grade actually supplied.
Buyers searching for Hastelloy C bar should state whether the exact legacy chemistry is needed or whether C-276 is acceptable. That choice decides the source, lead time and price of the order.
Common Applications of Hastelloy C Round Bar
➡️ Machined shafts, spindles, valve stems, pump sleeves and pins for food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical equipment, where the passive chromium oxide film resists both product acids and caustic clean-in-place chemicals.
➡️ Fasteners, studs, bolts, threaded rod and anchor components produced from bar stock, chosen for corrosion resistance combined with the ductility needed for cold heading and thread rolling.
➡️ Chemical, water treatment and general process plant parts such as agitator shafts, flange blanks, nozzles and support components handling water, steam and mildly corrosive media free of significant chlorides.
➡️ Architectural and structural hardware including handrail stanchions, balustrade fittings, tension rods and bollards, where a bright ground or polished bar finish provides both appearance and low maintenance.

Technical Specifications

Wrought Hastelloy C has no current ASTM bar specification, so the technical table shows historic reference data and the supply route rather than live specification limits. Any quotation for “Hastelloy C bar” should state exactly which material and standard will be supplied.
In most cases the supplier will offer C-276, UNS N10276, W.Nr. 2.4819, to ASTM B574 or ASME SB574, solution annealed at about 1120°C and water quenched. Where the part is cast, CW-12MW to ASTM A494 is the correct route, but that is a casting grade and does not produce wrought bar.
Tolerances, test methods and certification will then follow the standard of the grade actually supplied. For C-276, this means ASTM B574 dimensional tables, heat chemistry, tensile tests and an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Density of Alloy C and C-276 is about 8.9 g/cm³, and both are non-magnetic. Buyers replacing legacy parts should also check whether the original drawing has special hardness, surface or corrosion-test requirements that must carry over to the new material.
When a legacy drawing calls for Hastelloy C, the purchase order should name the replacement grade and its standard clearly. This avoids confusion at receiving inspection and keeps the certificate in line with the approved change.

Chemical Composition
View the chemical composition and applicable material limits for Alloy C Round Bar
The composition table shows the historic limits published for UNS N10002. They are given for reference so buyers can compare legacy material with modern grades, not as a live specification.
Chromium at 14.5–16.5% forms a protective oxide in oxidising media. Molybdenum at 15–17% and tungsten at 3.0–4.5% give strong resistance to reducing acids, pitting and crevice corrosion. This three-element balance is the core of the Ni-Cr-Mo family, and it is carried almost unchanged into C-276.
Iron at 4–7% and vanadium at 0.2–0.4% came from the melting practice of the time. Cobalt was allowed up to 2.5%.
The critical limits are carbon at 0.08% maximum and silicon at 1.0% maximum. These are about eight and twelve times higher than the C-276 limits. At welding temperatures they form carbides and mu phase along grain boundaries, removing molybdenum and chromium from nearby metal. That depleted zone is what corrodes in service.
When comparing an old certificate with a C-276 certificate, carbon and silicon are the quickest way to tell the two apart.
Placing an old Alloy C certificate beside a new C-276 certificate is the simplest way to see how far carbon and silicon were cut in the later grade.

Mechanical Properties
Check the key mechanical properties and performance requirements of Alloy C Round Bar
The mechanical values in the table are historic guidance for wrought Alloy C in the solution annealed condition: about 690 MPa tensile strength, 310 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation. They are not current specification minimums and should not be used alone for new design.
Where C-276 is supplied as the replacement, ASTM B574 applies. It requires at least 690 MPa tensile strength, 283 MPa yield strength and 40% elongation for solution annealed bar. Strength is therefore very close to the legacy material, so most replacement parts can be made to the same drawing dimensions.
Both alloys work harden during machining. Sharp carbide tools, rigid setups and steady feeds help avoid a hardened surface layer that can chip tools.
If a legacy part needs a hardness or impact value that the original drawing specified, the buyer should ask the supplier to test the replacement bar to that requirement and report it on the certificate. The EN 10204 3.1 certificate must name the grade and standard actually delivered.
Buyers should read the certificate against the standard named on the order, since the limits differ between cast CW-12MW, legacy wrought N10002 and modern C-276 bar.
